The new Volkswagen Golf GTI, and its GTD and R sister models, are worthy successors to the 1976 original – the very first ‘hot hatch’. The terrific performance of older models has been enhanced even further, with Volkswagen designers making the car more secure, fuel efficient and environmentally friendly than ever before. The Golf also comes with a plethora of optional extras, with some of the highlights being a rear-view parking camera, Park Assist system and Adaptive Chassis Control.

As with previous GTIs, the engine of the newest model offers superb power and torque. The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TSI petrol engine gives you a hefty 210PS of power. In comparison, the GTD’s 2.0 litre diesel engine produces a slightly smaller 170PS. The efficiency of diesel power, however, is the GTD’s strength. Combined fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions are a respectable 53.3mpg and 139g/km.

The R edition is the fastest Golf yet. Its 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine delivers a mammoth 270PS, giving you 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds with manual transmission, and 5.5 seconds with auto-DSG transmission.
